What is this medication?
Antiemetic; Selective 5-HT3 Receptor Antagonist
Ondansetron, Zofran is officially indicated for cancer chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, postoperative nausea, and vomiting.
How does this medication work?
Ondansetron, Zofran is a selective 5-HT3-receptor antagonist which blocks serotonin, both peripherally on vagal nerve terminals and centrally in the chemoreceptor trigger zone.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: 8mg 3 times daily.
How to Take: Take 30 minutes prior to chemotherapy; 1 to 2 hours before radiation; 30 to 60 minutes prior to surgery or induction of anesthesia. For orally disintegrating tablets, make sure to not remove from blister until needed. Peel backing off the blister, do not attempt to push tablet through the foil. Using dry hands, place tablet on tongue and allow to dissolve. Swallow with saliva (no need to administer with liquids). For soluble film tablets do not remove from pouch until immediately before use. Using dry hands, place film on top of tongue and allow to dissolve (4 to 20 seconds). Swallow with or without liquid. If using more than one film, each film should be allowed to dissolve completely before administering the next film.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Ondansetron, Zofran make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take. QT prolongation and serotonin syndrome have been observed with Ondansetron, Zofran.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Headache, fatigue, constipation, diarrhea, pruritis, skin rash, gynecologic disease, urinary retention.
