What is this medication?
Antilipemic Agent, HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor
Simvastatin, Zocor is indicated for various dyslipidemia, prevention of cardiovascular disease, reduce risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. (may also be used for conditions not listed)
How does this medication work?
HMG-CoA Reductase is the rate limiting enzyme in cholesterol production. Simvastatin/Zocor works by inhibiting this enzyme resulting in increased LDL cholesterol catabolism (breakdown) in liver cells (where most cholesterol is produced). HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors also stabilize blood vessels and lowers inflammation around coronary plaques and inhibits clot formation at these sites which are normally the cause of myocardial infarctions (heart attacks).
How should I take this medication?
5mg-40mg once daily in the evening. 80 mg should only be used in patients who have already been on this dosage for over 12 months with no sign of myopathy and are not on any interacting medications. If 40mg is not sufficient it is still not recommended to increase to 80mg but either change to an alternate therapy or add another lipid lowering agent.
How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, take consistently at same times each day unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.
You Need to Avoid: Do not consume grapefruit juice while on this medication as it will increase the effects of Simvastatin/Zocor potentially leading to serious adverse events. The natural supplement “red yeast rice” has similar activity as this medication and can increase risk of adverse events.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Simvastatin/Zocor make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or are pregnant or breastfeeding
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Myalgia (muscle pain), headache, weakness, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, muscle pain, atrial fibrillation, upper respiratory infection
