Colesevelam, Lodalis (CDN)/Welchol (US)
Antilipemic Agent, Bile Acid Sequestrant

Canadian Equivalent: Lodalis
Indicated for treatment of hyperlipidemia (primary), and diabetes mellitus (type 2).
How does this medication work?
Colesevelam, Lodalis/Welchol increased fecal loss of bile acid-bound LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol by binding bile acids to form an insoluble complex that is eliminated in feces.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: 3.75 g/day in 1 or 2 divided doses
How to Take: Administer with food (and plenty of fluids for tablets). Due to tablet size, it is recommended that any patient who has trouble swallowing tablets should use the oral suspension form.
You Need to Avoid: Powder is not to be taken in dry form (to avoid esophageal distress).
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Colesevelam, Lodalis/Welchol make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have history of bowel obstruction, hypertriglyceridemia, history of hypertriglyceridemia-induced pancreatitis, gastrointestinal disease, have phenylketonuria, are prone to deficiency of fat soluble vitamins, if you are pregnant, or breastfeeding.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Constipation, headache, fatigue, dyspepsia, nausea
