What is this medication?

Nelfinavir, Viracept
Antiretroviral, Protease Inhibitor (Anti-HIV)

How does this medication work? 

Nelfinavir, Viracept binds HIV-1 protease and inhibits cleavage of viral Gag-Pol polyprotein precursors into individual components, all required for infectious HIV. This results in immature, noninfectious virus being produced.

How should I take this medication? 

Usual (Oral): 750 mg 3 times daily or 1,250 mg twice daily with meals in combination with other antiretroviral therapies

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, take consistently at same times each day unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.  Administer tablets with a meal.

You Need to Avoid:  Significant drug interactions exist, requiring dose/frequency adjustment or avoidance so avoid starting any new medications without consulting prescriber.   Do not administer with acidic food or juice (orange juice, apple juice, or applesauce) since the combination may have a bitter taste.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Nelfinavir, Viracept make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have diabetes, hemophilia A/B, hepatic impairment, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Nelfinavir, Viracept use has been associated with rare but potentially serious adverse events such as diarrhea, fat redistribution, and immune reconstitution syndrome.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication? 

Diarrhea, nausea, flatulence, lymphocytopenia, decreased neutrophils
