What is this medication?

Verapamil, Isoptin/Calan/Verelan
Nondihydropyridine Calcium Channel Blocker; Class IV Antiarrhythmic; Antianginal

Verapamil/Isoptin/Calan/Verelan is officially indicated for hypertension, angina, atrial fibrillation, and supraventricular tachycardia. It is also prescribed and compounded off-label for Peyronie’s disease and erectile dysfunction.

How does this medication work? 

Verapamil/Isoptin/Calan/Verelan works by blocking the entry of calcium through calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle and the myocardium which causes vascular and coronary vasodilation increasing the delivery of blood and oxygen to the tissue.  It can be compounded into a topical form for off-label use on various circulatory conditions.

How should I take this medication? 

Immediate release: Initial: 80 to 120 mg 3 times daily; increase as needed at ≥1- to 2-day intervals to therapeutic dose; maximum dose: 480 mg/day in 3 divided doses.

Extended release: Initial: 180 mg once daily; increase as needed at 7- to 14-day intervals to a therapeutic dose; maximum dose: 480 mg/day in 1 to 2 divided doses.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Do not use if the patient has a conduction abnormality

Use with caution in hepatic disease and/or elevated hepatic enzymes

Use with caution in hypotension/syncope

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication? 

Well tolerated, most side effects are transient and mild to moderate in nature. The most common side effects include:
