Indacaterol+Glycopyrronium, Ultibro (CDN)/Utibron (US)
Long-Acting Anticholinergic Agent; Long-Acting Beta2 Adrenergic Agonist

Brand Name US: Utibron Neohaler
Canadian Equivalent: Ultibro Breezhaler

Indicated for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

How does this medication work?

Indacaterol is a selective beta agonist that binds to beta2 receptors located on the bronchial smooth muscle causing the airway to dilate reducing the work required to breath while having little effect on heart rate.

Glycopyrrolate is a long acting, competitive, reversible inhibitor of acetylcholine at type 1-3 muscarinic (M1,2,3) receptors located in the bronchial smooth muscle which causes bronchodilation.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Indacaterol+Glycopyrronium, Ultibro/Ultibron make sure your physician is aware of any allergies (severe allergy to milk protein) or medications you currently take, if you have cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, hypokalemia, a seizure disorder, glaucoma, suffer from urinary retention, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Indacaterol+Glycopyrronium, Ultibro/Ultibron use has been associated with rare but serious adverse events such as CNS effects, paradoxical bronchospasm, and hypersensitivity reactions.

How should I take this medication?

Oral inhalation: Dry powder inhaler (capsule): Contents of one capsule (indacaterol 27.5 mcg/glycopyrrolate 15.6 mcg) inhaled twice daily (maximum: 2 capsules/day).

Ultibro Breezhaler [Canadian] 
Dry powder inhaler (capsule): Contents of one capsule (indacaterol 110 mcg/glycopyrrolate 50 mcg) inhaled once daily (maximum: 1 capsule/day).

How to Take: Use the new inhaler included with each prescription. Place one capsule into inhaler capsule chamber and close until it clicks. Pierce capsule by pressing buttons once on sides of device. Inhale through mouthpiece and if powder is left within capsule, repeat inhalation procedure. Discard any capsules that are exposed to air and not used immediately.  Administer at the same time(s) each day. Protect from light and moisture. 

You Need to Avoid: Do not swallow capsules.  Do not remove capsule from blister until immediately before use. Do not wash mouthpiece; inhalation device should be kept dry.  Do not store capsules in the inhaler.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible on the same day. Do not take more than one dose in a day.

How should I store this medication?

Keep this and all medication out of the reach of children.  Capsules should always be stored in the blister strip and only removed immediately before use. Store in a dry place away from direct heat and sunlight.

Dispose of each inhaler after 30 days of use.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Cough, headache, nausea, nasopharyngitis.
