What is this medication?

Ursodiol, Urso
Gallstone Dissolution Agent

Ursodiol, Urso is officially indicated for primary biliary cirrhosis

How does this medication work?

Ursodiol, Urso reduces the secretion of cholesterol from the liver and the fractional reabsorption of cholesterol by the intestines to decrease cholesterol content of the bile and bile stones.  The exact mechanism for the treatment of biliary cirrhosis is not known.

How should I take this medication?

Oral: 13 to 15 mg/kg/day in 2 to 4 divided doses (with food).  It may be given once daily (at bedtime) to improve compliance if needed.

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, take consistently at same times each day with food unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.

You Need to Avoid: Do not administer with aluminum-based antacids or bile acid sequestrants. If aluminum-based antacids are needed, administer 2 hours after ursodiol.  Some experts recommend administering ursodiol 1 hour prior to or 4 to 5 hours after bile acid sequestrants.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Ursodiol, Urso make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have liver disease, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Bile flow must be maintained during therapy to prevent biliary obstruction.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
