Fenofibrate, Tricor/Triglide/Trilipix
Description: Antilipemic Agent, Fibric Acid

Brand Name US: Tricor
Canadian Equivalent: Lipidil

Hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia

How does this medication work?

Fenofibrate, Tricor/Triglide/Trilipix activates peroxisome proliferator activated receptor α (PPARα). Through this mechanism, Fenofibrate, Tricor/Triglide/Trilipix increases lipolysis and elimination of triglyceride-rich particles from plasma by activating lipoprotein lipase and reducing production of apoprotein C-III (an inhibitor of lipoprotein lipase activity).  

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: 30mg to 160mg daily depending upon dosage form and indication.

How to Take

Oral Micronized Formulation: Take with or without food, swallow whole.  Do not crush, chew or open capsules.

Oral Supra Formulation: Take with food, swallow whole.  Do not crush, chew or open capsules.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Fenofibrate, Tricor/Triglide/Trilipix x make sure your physician is aware of any allergies and medications you currently take.  Fenofibrate, Tricor/Triglide/Trilipix has been linked to cholelithiasis, hepatic effects including cholestatic hepatitis, rarely to rhabdomyolysis, pancreatitis, and renal impairment.  

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication? 

Elevated hepatic enzymes, pulmonary embolism, thrombophlebitis, dizziness, pain, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, constipation, elevated liver enzymes, muscle and joint pain, upper respiratory tract infections, nasopharyngitis and sinusitis.
