How does this medication work?
Desoximetasone, Topicort is a topical corticosteroid that exhibits anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties. May depress the formation, release, and activity of endogenous chemical mediators of inflammation (kinins, histamine, liposomal enzymes, prostaglandins) through the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins (lipocortins) and sequential inhibition of the release of arachidonic acid. Desoximetasone, Topicort is considered an intermediate to higher potency corticosteroid.
How should I take this medication?
Topical (Cream, Gel, Ointment) Apply a thin film over the affected area twice daily.
Topical (Spray): Apply a thin spray over the affected areas twice daily.
How to Use: For external use only. Apply to clean, dry skin and rub in gently. Wash hands thoroughly before and after use. Unless otherwise directed by health care professional, do not use with occlusive dressing. Avoid contact with eyes.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Desoximetasone, Topicort make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take. Like any other corticosteroid, Desoximetasone, Topicort may cause hypercortisolism or suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in younger children or when using on high doses or a prolonged period. Desoximetasone, Topicort can also cause contact dermatitis, immunosuppression, Kaposi’s sarcoma, local skin reactions including skin atrophy, striae, telangiectasias, burning, itching, irritation, dryness, folliculitis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, secondary infection, and miliaria) may occur.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
