How does this medication work?

Methimazole, Tapazole inhibits the synthesis of thyroid hormones and thus is effective in the treatment of hyperthyroidism. Methimazole, Tapazole does not inactivate stored and circulating thyroxine and triiodothyronine nor does it interfere with the effectiveness of thyroid hormones given by mouth or injection.

How should I take this medication?

Usual (Oral): Initial dosing is based on clinical status and gland size; free T4 levels may be used to guide initial therapy.

Recommend Dosing
Free T4 levels 1 to 1.5 times ULN: 5 to 10 mg once daily.

Free T4 levels >1.5 to 2 times ULN (or iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis): 10 to 20 mg once daily.

Free T4 levels >2 times ULN: 20 to 40 mg/day.

Dose adjustment: Usual maintenance dose: 5 to 10 mg once daily. Assess free T4 and total T3 at 4- to 6-week intervals; when normal, reduce dose by 30% to 50% and repeat thyroid function tests in 4 to 6 weeks; continue to adjust dose to achieve euthyroidism.

How to Take: Take with or without food
