Officially indicated for treatment and maintenance of duodenal ulcer.
How does this medication work?
Carafate/Sucralfate forms a viscous paste-like coating that covers and protects the gastric lining of the stomach against acid and bile salts.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: Take 1g 4 times daily for 4 to 8 weeks initially; then can take 1g twice daily as maintenance
How to Take: Take on an empty stomach. If using a suspension, make sure to shake well before using each time. It is important to separate the administration of other oral medications you may be taking by Carafate/Sucralfate by at least 2 hours.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Can cause hyperglycemia in diabetics
Use with caution in patients with renal impairment
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Well tolerated, most side effects are mild to moderate in nature. The most common side effects include:
