How does this medication. work?
Ivermectin (Systemic), Stromectol is a semisynthetic anthelminthic agent. It selectively binds glutamate-gates chloride channels which high affinity. These are found in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells. Binding these channels results in increased cell membrane permeability to chloride ions then hyperpolarization of the nerve or muscle cell, and death of the parasite.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: Initial: 1 to 2 mg/day in divided doses, then increase dosage as needed every other day; maximum dose: 10 mg/day or 0.2 mg/kg/day (whichever is less)
How to Take: Normally administer on an empty stomach with water as food significantly increases bioavailability. When treating pediculosis pubis and scabies, it may be recommended to take with food to increase bioavailability in the epidermis.
You Need to Avoid: Significant drug interactions exist, requiring dose/frequency adjustment or avoidance so avoid starting any new medications without consulting prescriber.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Ivermectin (Systemic), Stromectol make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have loiasis, are immunocompromised, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Ivermectin (Systemic), Stromectol use has been associated with rare but serious cutaneous/systemic reactions.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Pruritus, dermatological reaction, lymphadenitis, arthralgia, synovitis, fever
