What is this medication?
Anti-Parkinson Agent, COMT Inhibitor, Decarboxylase Inhibitor, Dopamine Precursor

How does this medication work?
Stalevo is a combination of levodopa, carbidopa and entacapone for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Levodopa is a metabolic precursor to dopamine and is capable of crossing the blood brain barrier (BBB) where it is converted to dopamine. Carbidopa inhibits the peripheral breakdown of levodopa and subsequently increases levodopa levels. Entacapone is a reversible and selective inhibitor of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), resulting in more sustained levodopa serum levels and increased concentrations available for absorption across the BBB.
