Trospium, Trosec/Sanctura in indicated for the treatment of overactive bladder.
How does this medication work?
Trospium, Trosec/Sanctura Trospium antagonizes the effects of acetylcholine on muscarinic receptors in cholinergically innervated organs. It reduces the smooth muscle tone of the bladder.
How should I take this medication?
Immediate release: 20 mg twice daily
Extended release: 60 mg once daily in the morning
How to Take: Administer instant release formulation with water on an empty stomach at least 1 hour prior to meals. Administer the extended-release formulation in the morning with water on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before a meal.
You Need to Avoid: Ethanol should not be ingested within 2 hours of the administration of the extended-release formulation; may increase incidence of drowsiness.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Trospium, Trosec/Sanctura make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have Alzheimer’s disease, bladder flow obstruction, a gastrointestinal obstruction disorder, glaucoma, hepatic impairment, myasthenia gravis, renal impairment, ulcerative colitis, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Trospium, Trosec/Sanctura use has been associated with rare but serious adverse events such as angioedema and CNS effects (drowsiness, confusion, dizziness, hallucinations, CNS depression, etc.).
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Xerostomia, headache, constipation, urinary tract infection
