Selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM)
Raloxifene, Evista is officially indicated for treatment of osteoporosis in post-menopausal females while also reducing the risk of some forms of invasive breast cancer.

Increased risk of VTE:
Increased risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism have been reported with raloxifene. Women with active or history of VTE should not take raloxifene.
Increased risk of death due to stroke occurred in a trial in postmenopausal women with documented coronary heart disease or increased risk for major coronary events. Consider the risk-benefit balance in women at risk for stroke.”
How does this medication work?
Raloxifene, Evista is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that has a complex mechanism of action where it has estrogen like activity in the bones to prevent osteoporosis, but blocks estrogen activity in the breast and uterine tissue.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: 60mg once daily without regard to meals.
How to Take: Take the medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor at the same time each day. It is also recommended that osteoporosis patients supplement with calcium and vitamin D if dietary intake is below recommended values.
Do Not Use: If you have a known hypersensitivity to Raloxifene, Evista or any component of the formulation, it has not been studied in males or premenopausal women so it should not be used on either patient group.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Raloxifene, Evista make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have kidney disease, liver disease, high triglycerides, unexplained uterine bleeding, or have a history of breast cancer.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, make sure to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Cardiovascular: Peripheral edema (3% to 14%)
Endocrine & metabolic: Hot flash (8% to 29%)
Infection: Infection (11%)
Neuromuscular & skeletal: Arthralgia (11% to 16%), leg cramps (≤12%), muscle spasm (≤12%)
Respiratory: Flu-like symptoms (14% to 15%)
