What is this medication?
Pyrantel Pamoate, Combantrin (CDN)/ Pin-Away/Reeses Pinworm Medicine (US)
Pyrantel Pamoate is indicated for treatment of enterobiasis (pinworm).
How does this medication work?
Pyrantel Pamoate, Combantrin/Pin-Away/Reeses Pinworm Medicine causes the release of acetylcholine and inhibits cholinesterase. This results in depolarizing neuromuscular blockade which paralyzes the helminths.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: 11 mg/kg (maximum: 1 g/dose) as a single dose. Repeat dose in 2 weeks to prevent reinfection.
How to Take: May be administered without regard to meals; may be taken with water, milk, or fruit juice. The use of a laxative is not required prior to, during, or after use. Since pinworm infections are easily spread to others, treat all family members in close contact with the patient.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Pyrantel Pamoate, Combantrin/Pin-Away/Reeses Pinworm Medicine make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have hepatic impairment, are pregnant, or breastfeeding.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Dizziness, headache, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
