Darunavir, Prezista is officially indicated for treatment of HIV-1 infection
How does this medication work?
Binds to the site of HIV-1 protease activity and inhibits cleavage of viral Gag-Pol polyprotein precursors into individual functional proteins required for infectious HIV resulting in the formation of immature, non-infectious viral particles.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: 800mg once daily or 600mg twice a day combined with other agents.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Darunavir, Prezista make sure your physician is aware of any allergies (sulfa) or medications you currently take. Use with caution in patients with diabetes, hemophilia A or B, or liver disease. Use of Darunavir has been associated with rare but serious reactions such as hepatotoxicity, fat redistribution, hypersensitivity reactions, and immune reconstitution syndrome.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Skin rash, increased serum cholesterol, increase LDL cholesterol, increased serum glucose, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea
