What is this medication?
Proton pump inhibitor
Lansoprazole, Prevacid is indicated for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, hypersecretory conditions including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
How does this medication work?
Lansoprazole, Prevacid decreases acid secretion in gastric parietal cells through inhibition of (H+, K+)-ATPase enzyme system, blocking the final step in gastric acid production.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: 15mg to 30mg once daily
How to Take:
Oral: Take 30 minutes to 60 minutes before a meal; best if taken before breakfast. If administering twice daily, first dose should be administered before breakfast and the second dose before dinner. The intact granules should not be chewed or crushed; however, several options are available for those patients unable to swallow capsules:
Orally disintegrating tablets: place the tablet on tongue; allow to dissolve (with or without water) until particles can be swallowed.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Lansoprazole, Prevacid make sure your physician is aware of any allergies and medications you currently take. Use of proton pump inhibitors in general can increase your risk of C-difficile, especially in hospitalized patients. The long-term use of proton pump inhibitors is discouraged because of an increased incidence of osteoporosis-related bone fractures of the hip, spine, or wrist may occur. In addition, there is a increase risk of fundic gland polyps and interstitial nephritis.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, headache.
