What is this medication? 

Pravastatin, Pravachol
HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor

Pravastatin, Pravachol is indicated for treatment of hyperlipidemia, prevention of cardiovascular disease.

How does this medication work? 

Pravastatin, Pravachol works by competitively blocking the active site of the first and key rate-limiting enzyme in the mevalonate pathway, HMG-CoA reductase. Inhibition of this site prevents substrate access, thereby blocking the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonic acid which is required for cholesterol synthesis. In addition, Pravastatin, Pravachol has anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to improve endothelial function, reduce inflammation at the site of the coronary plaque, inhibit platelet aggregation and even has an anticoagulant effect.

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: 10mg to 80mg daily.

How to Take: Can take with or without food.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting Pravastatin, Pravachol make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  Pravastatin, Pravachol can elevate blood glucose levels, and has been shown to cause hepatic failure (rare), immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy and rhabdomyolysis.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication? 

Chest pain, headache, fatigue, dizziness, skin rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, cystitis, elevated liver enzymes, influenza, muscle pain and cough.
