What is this medication?

Repaglinide, Gluconorm/Prandin
Antidiabetic Agent, Meglitinide Analog

Brand Name US: Prandin
Canadian Equivalent: Gluconorm

Repaglinide, Gluconorm/Prandin is indicated for Diabetes Mellitus Type 2.

How does this medication work? 

Repaglinide, Gluconorm/Prandin blocks ATP-dependent potassium channels thereby depolarizing the cell membrane, allowing calcium entry through calcium channels. This increase in intracellular calcium stimulates the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells in a glucose dependent manner.

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: 0.5-4mg before each meal 2, 3, or 4 times/day depending on number of meals

How to Take: Administer within 30 minutes before meals; may be administered preprandially 2, 3, or 4 times/day in response to changes in meal pattern.

You Need to Avoid: If a meal is missed, do not administer next scheduled dose; if hypoglycemia occurs, reduce dose. 

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Repaglinide, Gluconorm/Prandin make sure your physician is aware of any allergies, medications you currently take, if you have had bariatric surgery, if you have cardiovascular disease, liver disease, kidney disease, type 1 diabetes, are pregnant, or breastfeeding.  Repaglinide use has been associated with hypoglycemia and glucose monitoring is recommended.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication? 

Headache, hypoglycemia, upper respiratory infection
