What is this medication? 

Nifedipine, Adalat/Procardia
Antihypertensive Agent; Antianginal Agent; Dihydropyridine Calcium Channel Blocker

Nifedipine/Adalat/Procardia is officially indicated for hypertension and chronic stable or vasospastic angina.  It is also prescribed off-label for use in anal fissures (topical), high altitude pulmonary edema, hypertensive emergency in pregnancy or postpartum, Raynaud phenomenon, and tocolysis. (may also be used for conditions not listed)

How does this medication work? 

Nifedipine/Adalat/Procardia blocks calcium channels in smooth muscle of the blood vessels which relaxes them causing them to dilate them which reduces vascular resistance thereby lowering blood pressure and increasing blood flow in areas such as the heart and limbs. 

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: 30-120mg in extended release tablets once daily

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, swallow whole, take consistently at same times each day unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.

You Need to Avoid: Grapefruit can affect the enzyme that metabolizes this medication resulting in potentially high blood levels however the effect is thought to be minor or insignificant.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting Nifedipine/Adalat/Procardia make sure your physician is aware of any allergies, medications you currently take, if you have liver disease, aortic stenosis, gastrointestinal strictures, heart failure, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication? 

Peripheral edema, flushing, dizziness, headache, heartburn, nausea, palpitations, mood changes, tremor, muscle cramp, etc.
