How does this medication work?
Leuprolide, Lupron/Eligard is a synthetic nonpeptide that acts as a gonadotropin receptor hormone agonist and subsequently suppresses gonadotrope secretion of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone that subsequently suppresses gonadal sex steroid production.
How should I take this medication?
Intramuscular: Inject 7.5mg monthly or 22.5mg every 3 months or 30mg every 4 months or 45mg every 6 months.
Subcutaneous: Inject 7.5mg monthly or 22.5mg every 3 months or 30mg every 4 months or 45mg every 6 months.
How to Take:
Depot intramuscular injection: Administer it as a single injection into the gluteal area, anterior thigh, or deltoid. Vary injection site periodically. Administer within 2 hours of preparation.
Subcutaneous injection: Administer it into a site with adequate subcutaneous tissue (i.e. upper or mid-abdomen, upper buttocks) that does not have excessive pigment, nodules, lesions, or hair. Avoid areas with brawny or fibrous tissues or areas that may be compressed or rubbed. Administer within 30 minutes of preparation.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Leuprolide, Lupron/Eligard make sure your physician is aware of any allergies and medications you currently take. You should be aware that Leuprolide, Lupron/Eligard has numerous serious adverse effects such as but not limited to sudden cardiac death and stroke, decrease bone mineral density, hyperglycemia, pituitary apoplexy, seizures, spinal cord compression and vaginal bleeding will require periodic monitoring.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Before reconstitution, Lupron can be stored in its original container at room temperature (77°F [25°C], with a range between 59°F to 86°F [15°C to 30°C]). Keep the carton away from heat and moisture. Once Lupron Depot is reconstituted, inject the suspension immediately.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
The main predominant side effect is injection site pain. Any other side effects occur at an incidence of less than 2%.
