What is this medication?

Ciclopirox Olamine, Loprox/Penlac/Stieprox/Ciclodan
Antifungal, Topical

Officially indicated to treat both fungal infectious and seborrheal dermatological conditions. 

How does this medication work? 

Ciclopirox Olamine, Loprox/Penlac/Stieprox/Ciclodan inhibits the transport of essential elements in the fungal cell causing a disruption in DNA and RNA synthesis and subsequently polypeptide functional protein production.  

How should I take this medication? 

Tinea Pedis and Corporis
Topical (Cream, Gel and Suspension): Apply twice daily, gently massage into affected areas and surrounding skin; if no improvement after 4 weeks of treatment, re-evaluate the diagnosis.

Tinea Cruris and Versicolor 
Topical (Cream and Suspension): Apply twice daily, gently massage into affected areas and surrounding skin; if no improvement after 4 weeks of treatment, re-evaluate the diagnosis.

Cutaneous Candidiasis
Topical (Cream and Suspension): Apply twice daily, gently massage into affected areas and surrounding skin; if no improvement after 4 weeks of treatment, re-evaluate the diagnosis.

Nail Onychomycosis
Topical (Lacquer Solution): Apply to adjacent skin and affected nails daily (as a part of a comprehensive management program for onychomycosis). Remove with alcohol every 7 days.

Seborrheic Dermatitis
Topical (Scalp Gel): Apply twice daily, gently massage into affected area; if no improvement after 4 weeks of treatment, re-evaluate diagnosis.

Topical (Scalp Shampoo): Apply ~5 mL to wet hair; lather in and leave on hair and scalp for ~3 minutes; rinse. May use up to 10 mL for longer hair. Repeat twice weekly for 4 weeks; allow a minimum of 3 days between applications; if no improvement after 4 weeks of treatment, re-evaluate diagnosis.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Sensitivity and irritation at the site of application

Use with caution in immunocompromised patients

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light, heat, and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

The frequency of side effects is not defined, dependent upon the dose, duration and concomitant therapy.

Cardiovascular: Facial edema, ventricular tachycardia (shampoo)

Central Nervous System: Headache

Dermatologic: Acne vulgaris, alopecia, contact dermatitis, erythema, hair discoloration (rare; shampoo formulation in light-haired individuals), localized erythema, nail disease (shape or color change with lacquer), pruritus, skin rash, xeroderma

Local: Application site burning (gel: 7% to 34%; other dose forms: ≤1%), local irritation, local pain

Ophthalmic: Eye pain
