Indicated for treatment of enterococcal infection (vancomycin resistant), pneumonia, skin infections.
How does this medication work?
Linezolid, Zyvox/Zyvoxam suppresses bacterial growth by inhibiting the initiation process of protein synthesis
How should I take this medication?
Usual (Oral): 600mg every 12 hours.
Note: Linezolid is not a preferred agent for the treatment of infections requiring prolonged therapy as the risk of serious hematologic and neurologic toxicity increases after >2 weeks and >4 weeks of therapy, respectively.
How to Use (Oral): Administer with or without regard to meals. For oral suspensions, mix gently (do not shake) prior to taking.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Linezolid, Zyvox/Zyvoxam make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform. Linezolid, Zyvox/Zyvoxam has been reported to cause lactic acidosis, myelosuppression, peripheral and optic neuropathy, serotonin syndrome, and fungal or bacterial superinfection when used over a prolonged period of time. Linezolid, Zyvox/Zyvoxam should be used with caution in patients with carcinoid syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, pheochromocytoma, and history of seizures.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Diarrhea, decreased white blood cell count, pruritus, skin rash, increased amylase, increased lactate dehydrogenase, abdominal pain, dysgeusia, increased serum lipase, loose stools, nausea, oral candidiasis, vomiting
