What is this medication?

Ketoprofen, Anafen
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Indicated for treatment of pheumatic arthritis, osteoarthritis, pain (immediate release only), primary dysmenorrhea (immediate release only).

FDA has issued a warning on the use of NSAIDs from 20 weeks gestation or later in pregnancy can lead to fetal renal dysfunction leading to oligohydramnios, neonatal renal impairment which may be fatal.  NSAIDs cause an increased risk of cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction and stroke, which can be fatal.  Ketoprofen is contraindicated in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.  NSAIDs cause an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse events such as bleeding, ulceration and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal.”

How does this medication work? 

Ketoprofen, Anafen works by blocking production in the body that causes inflammation.

How should I take this medication?

Usual (Oral): 

Immediate Release: 25mg to 50mg 4 times daily; maximum 300mg daily.

Enteric Coated: 50mg 3 to 4 times daily; maximum 300mg daily.

Extended Release: 200mg once daily; maximum 200mg daily.

How to Use:  Take with food.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting ketoprofen make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform.  Ketoprofen like other NSAIDs cause an increased risk of serious and potentially fatal cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction and stroke.   Ketoprofen can cause drug reactions characterized with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms. Ketoprofen does increase the risk of serious gastrointestinal conditions such an ulceration, bleeding and perforation.  Ketoprofen has also been associated with persistent urinary symptoms (bladder pain, dysuria, urinary frequency), decreased platelet adhesion and aggregation, hyperkalemia, ophthalmic effects (blurred vision), renal effects and potentially serious skin reactions including exfoliative dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN); may occur without warning.  Flurbiprofen should be used with caution in patients with aseptic meningitis, asthma, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, hepatic and/or renal impairment.

What if I miss a dose?

Missed doses should be taken as soon as remembered on the same day; return to the normal schedule the following day.  Do not take any extra doses to make up for a missed dose.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light.  Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Dyspepsia, abnormal hepatic function tests, skin rash, abdominal pain, anorexia, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, stomatitis, vomiting, renal insufficiency, urinary tract irritation, abnormal dreams, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, insomnia, malaise, nervousness
