What is this medication?
Triamcinolone Acetonide, Kenalog(US/CDN)/P-Care K40/P-Care K80/Pod-Care 100K/Pro-C-Dure 5/Pro-C-Dure 6/Zilretta(US)/Trispan(CDN)
Dermatoses (steroid-responsive), gout (acute flare), inflammatory/allergic conditions, multiple sclerosis (acute exacerbation), rheumatic conditions, endocrine disorders, hematologic disorders, neoplastic diseases, ophthalmic disease, renal disease, and GI disease.
How does this medication work?
Triamcinolone Acetonide, Kenalog/P-Care K40/P-Care K80/Pod-Care 100K/Pro-C-Dure 5/Pro-C-Dure 6/Zilretta/Trispan is a corticosteroid that exhibits anti-inflammatory antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties by suppressing mediators of inflammation through induction of phospholipase A2 and arachidonic acid.
How should I take this medication?
Intralesional: initial dose depends on the disease and lesion. Do not exceed 40mg per treatment, may be repeated every 3 to 4 weeks or less frequently.
Intra-articular: inject intra-articular 10mg (small joint), 30mg (medium joint), 40mg large joint.
Intra-muscular: initial intramuscular injection of 40mg to 60mg as a single dose; may be repeated once tor twice at ≥48-hour intervals if benefit fades or there is no flare resolution.
Note: Adjust dose depending upon condition being treated and response of patient. The lowest possible dose should be used to control the condition; when dose reduction is possible, the dose should be reduced gradually.
How to Take: Shake well before use to ensure suspension is uniform. Inspect visually to ensure no clumping; administer immediately after withdrawal so settling does not occur in the syringe. Do not administer any product IV or via the epidural or intrathecal route.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Triamcinolone Acetonide, Kenalog/P-Care K40/P-Care K80/Pod-Care 100K/Pro-C-Dure 5/Pro-C-Dure 6/Zilretta/Trispan may cause hypercortisolism or suppression of the HPA axis, in younger children when used in high doses for prolonged periods of time. Prolonged use of triamcinolone can also result in fungal or bacterial superinfections, Kaposi sarcoma, myopathy.
What if I miss a dose?
In case you miss a dose, use it as soon as you notice. If it is close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your dosing schedule. Do not use extra dose to make up for a missed dose.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Do not freeze or refrigerate. Protect from light.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Triamcinolone Acetonide injection, Kenalog/P-Care K40/P-Care K80/Pod-Care 100K/Pro-C-Dure 5/Pro-C-Dure 6/Zilretta/Trispan can cause atrophy at the injection site, hence avoid intramuscular administration to the deltoid muscle. Corticosteroid use may cause psychiatric disturbances including euphoria, insomnia, mood swings, personality changes and psychotic manifestations. Corticosteroids should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, gastrointestinal disease, head injury, myasthenia gravis, ocular disease, osteoporosis, renal impairment, seizure disorders, systemic sclerosis and thyroid disease.
