What is this medication?

Etravirine, Intelence
Antiretroviral, Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor (Anti-HIV)

Indicated for treatment of HIV-1 infection.

How does this medication work?

Etravirine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) which blocks RNA- and DNA-dependent polymerases preventing HIV-infected cells from replicating.

How should I take this medication?

Usual (Oral): 200mg twice daily.

How to Take Etravirine, Intelence:  Take after a meal.  Swallow the tablet whole, do not break, crush, or chew. If you are unable to swallow the tablet whole, you may disperse tablets in water (5 mL [at least enough to cover tablets]); stir well (until water looks milky), then add ~15 mL of water, milk, or orange juice, and drink immediately. Tablets should not be placed in orange juice or milk without first adding water. Rinse glass several times (with water, milk or orange juice) and swallow entire contents to ensure administration of dose. Do not use carbonated beverages or warm (>40°C) water.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Etravirine, Intelence make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform.  Etravirine, Intelence has been associated with a number of adverse effects including accumulation and redistribution of fat, development of immune reconstitution syndrome, and skin hypersensitivity reactions.  Etravirine, Intelence should be used in treatment-naive patients, or experienced patients without evidence of viral mutations conferring resistance to nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and protease inhibitors.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
