Ribavirin, Ibavyr (CDN)/Moderiba (US/CDN)/Copegus/Rebetol/Ribasphere (US)
Antihepaciviral, Nucleoside (Anti-HCV)
Indicated for treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus infection.
How does this medication work?
Ribavirin, Ibavyr/Moderiba/Copegus/Rebetol/Ribasphere inhibits the replication of RNA and DNA viruses. It inhibits influenza virus RNA polymerase activity and inhibits the initiation and elongation of RNA fragments resulting in inhibition of viral protein synthesis.
How should I take this medication?
<75 kg: 1 g daily in 2 divided doses
≥75 kg: 1.2 g daily in 2 divided doses
Low initial dose ribavirin: 600 mg; increase as tolerated
Dosing regimen, concomitant therapy, and duration is dependent on HCV genotype and treatment status as well as other factors (eg, presence and type of cirrhosis). How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, take consistently at same times each day with food unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.
You Need to Avoid: Capsule should not be opened, crushed, or broken.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Ribavirin, Ibavyr/Moderiba/Copegus/Rebetol/Ribasphere make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have hepatic impairment, renal impairment, if you have hemoglobinopathies, if you or your partner are pregnant or breastfeeding. Ribavirin, Ibavyr/Moderiba/Copegus/Rebetol/Ribasphere use has been associated with occurrences of hemolytic anemia. Ribavirin monotherapy is not effective for chronic hepatitis C infection and must be used in combination with other agents.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Alopecia, dermatitis, dermatologic disorder, diaphoresis, pruritus, skin rash, xeroderma, growth retardation (children), hyperuricemia, weight loss, abdominal pain, anorexia, decreased appetite, diarrhea, dyspepsia, gastrointestinal disease, nausea, upper abdominal pain, vomiting, xerostomia, anemia, hemolytic anemia, lymphocytopenia, neutropenia, hyperbilirubinemia, viral infection, erythema at injection site, inflammation at injection site, injection site reaction, anxiety, chills, depression, dizziness, emotional lability, fatigue, headache, insomnia, irritability, lack of concentration, nervousness, pain, right upper quadrant pain, rigors, arthralgia, asthenia, musculoskeletal pain, myalgia, cough, dyspnea, flu-like symptoms, pharyngitis, sinusitis, upper respiratory tract infection, fever
