Indicated for treatment of hypertension.
How does this medication work?
Hydralazine, Apresoline acts as a vasodilator on the arterial system which decreases systemic resistance. It is believed that Hydralazine, Apresoline inhibits IP3-induced release of calcium from the smooth muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum. This calcium combines with calmodulin to activate myosin light chain kinase, which induces contraction.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: 25 to 50 mg 3 or 4 times daily in combination with isosorbide dinitrate 3 or 4 times daily; maximum dose is 300 mg daily in divided doses.
Can take with or without food. However, food does increase the overall bioavailability.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Hydralazine, Apresoline make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take. Hydralazine, Apresoline can cause drug-induced lupus-like syndrome including glomerulonephritis. Hydralazine, Apresoline should not be used in patients with coronary heart disease, mitral valve rheumatic heart disease and cautiously in renal impairment.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
The frequency of incidence of side effects has not been reported but does include the following:
Angina pectoris, circulatory shock, flushing, orthostatic hypotension, palpitations, paradoxical pressor response, peripheral edema, tachycardia, anxiety, chills, depression, disorientation, dizziness, headache, increased intracranial pressure, diaphoresis, pruritus, skin rash, urticaria, anorexia, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, paralytic ileus, vomiting, lupus-like syndrome, conjunctivitis, nasal congestion.
