Galantamine is indicated for treatment of alzheimer dementia.
How does this medication work?
Galantamine, Razadyne, Razadyne ER is a centrally-acting cholinesterase inhibitor (competitive and reversible) as it elevates acetylcholine in cerebral cortex by slowing the degradation of acetylcholine while modulating nicotinic acetylcholine receptor to increase acetylcholine from surviving presynaptic nerve terminals.
How should I take this medication?
Oral (Immediate-Release): 16mg to 24mg daily in divided doses.
Oral (Extended-Release): 16mg to 24mg once daily.
How to Take: Take with breakfast and dinner. If therapy is interrupted for ≥3 days, restart at the lowest dose and increase to current dose.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Galantamine, Razadyne, Razadyne ER make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take. Galantamine, Razadyne, Razadyne ER can cause central nervous system depression, skin reactions (i.e. Stevens-Johnson syndrome, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, erythema multiforme), vagotonic effects, weight loss. Galantamine, Razadyne, Razadyne ER should be used with caution in patients with cardiac conduction abnormalities, hepatic and/or renal impairment, peptic ulcer disease, respiratory disease, seizure disorder and urinary tract obstruction.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Nausea, vomiting, bradycardia, syncope, dizziness, headaches, depression, falling, fatigue, lethargy, malaise, weight loss, loss in appetite, diarrhea, dyspepsia, tremor, muscle spasm.
