What is this medication?
Antimigraine Agent, Serotonin 5-HT1B, 1D Receptor Agonist
Indicated for treatment of migraines, and cluster headaches.
How does this medication work?
Frovatriptan, Frova is a selective agonist for serotonin (5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors) in cranial arteries and causes vasoconstriction which reduces blood flow and oxygen to the brain along with reducing neuroinflammation which helps with aborting migraine attacks.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: 2.5mg at the onset of a headache, a second dose may be administered after 2 hours have elapsed since the first dose (maximum: 7.5 mg/day).
How to Take: Can be taken with fluids as soon as headache symptoms appear.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Frovatriptan, Frova make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take. Frovatriptan, Frova can cause coronary artery vasospasm, transient ischemia, myocardial infarction, ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation, cardiac arrest, and even death. Frovatriptan, Frova ability to cause vasoconstriction has been reported to cause cerebral/subarachnoid hemorrhage and stroke, hypertension, vasospasm-related events such as peripheral vascular ischemia, gastrointestinal vascular ischemia and infarction, splenic infarction, and Raynaud syndrome. Frovatriptan, Frova like all other triptans should not be given to patients who have risk factors for coronary artery disease.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Flushing, hot or cold flashes, chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, fatigue, headache, paresthesia, drowsiness, dysesthesia, insomnia, diaphoresis, xerostomia, dyspepsia, diarrhea, vomiting, muscle pain, visual disturbance, tinnitus, rhinitis, sinusitis.
