What is this medication? 

Fluvastatin, Lescol XL
Statin, HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor

Indicated for management of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, and prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

How does this medication work? 

Fluvastatin, Lescol XL works by blocking an enzyme that is needed by the body to make cholesterol, which decreases the amount of cholesterol that may build up on the walls of the arteries and block blood flow to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body.

How should I take this medication? 

Usual (Oral):

Immediate Release: 40mg twice daily
Extended Release: 80mg once daily

How to Take Fluvastatin, Lescol XL: Administer without regard to meals. Do not break, chew, or crush ER tablets; do not open IR capsules. Do not administer two 40 mg IR capsules at once.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting Fluvastatin, Lescol XL, make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform.  Fluvastatin, Lescol XL can cause dysglycemia evident by the increase HbA1c and fasting blood glucose.  Diabetes patients should be strongly encouraged to use fluvastatin while also following a healthy lifestyle regimen. Fluvastatin, Lescol XL has been reported to rarely cause hepatotoxicity and rhabdomyolysis. Fluvastatin, Lescol XL should be used with caution in patients with hepatic impairment and/or ethanol, renal impairment. 

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
