What is this medication?
Indicated for treatment of adrenal insufficiency, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
How does this medication work?
Fludrocortisone, Florinef is a very potent mineralocorticoid with high glucocorticoid activity; used primarily for its mineralocorticoid effects. Fludrocortisone, Florinef through its mineralocorticoid activity causes an increase in sodium reabsorption and loss of potassium from renal distal tubules.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: 0.05mg to 0.2mg once daily.
How to Take: Administer without regard to food; if GI upset, may take with food.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Fludrocortisone, Florinef make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take. Fludrocortisone, Florinef is a corticosteroid and with prolonged use can cause hypercortisolism or suppression of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, particularly in younger children. Prolonged use of Fludrocortisone, Florinef can cause immunosuppression and increase the risk of infection including fungal and viral infections, Kaposi sarcoma, myopathy and changes in behavior such as euphoria, insomnia, mood swings, personality changes, severe depression to psychotic manifestations. Fludrocortisone, Florinef should be used with caution in patients with pre-existing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, gastrointestinal disease, myasthenia gravis, ocular disease, seizure disorders, systemic sclerosis and thyroid disease.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
The frequency of side effects is not well defined but has been reported to include the following:
Cardiac failure, cardiomegaly, edema, hypertension, delirium, depression, emotional lability, euphoria, hallucination, headache, increased intracranial pressure, insomnia, malaise, nervousness, personality changes, pseudotumor cerebri, psychiatric disturbance, psychosis, seizure, vertigo, acne vulgaris, atrophic striae, diaphoresis, erythema, hyperpigmentation, maculopapular rash, skin atrophy, skin rash, suppression of skin test reaction, urticaria, Cushing’s syndrome, diabetes mellitus, glycosuria, growth suppression, hirsutism, HPA-axis suppression, hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, hypokalemic alkalosis, impaired glucose tolerance, menstrual disease, negative nitrogen balance, abdominal distention, esophageal ulcer, pancreatitis, peptic ulcer, bruise, petechia, purpura, amyotrophy, bone fracture, myasthenia, myopathy, osteonecrosis (femoral and humeral heads), osteoporosis, vertebral compression fracture, cataracts, exophthalmos, glaucoma, wound healing impairment.
