Sphingosine 1-Phosphate (S1P) Receptor Modulator
Fingolimod, Gilenya is indicated for treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis.
How does this medication work?
Fingolimod, Gilenya binds to sphingosine 1-phosphate receptors 1, 3, 4, and 5. Fingolimod-phosphate blocks the lymphocytes’ ability to emerge from lymph nodes; therefore, the amount of lymphocytes available to the central nervous system is decreased, which reduces central inflammation.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: 0.5mg daily.
How to Take: Take orally with or without food.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Fingolimod, Gilenya make sure your physician is aware of any allergies and medications you currently take. Fingolimod, Gilenya has been associated with some serious adverse events including atrioventricular (AV) block, bradycardia, infections (i.e. cyptococcal meningitis, herpes zoster and simplex, human papilloma infections, liver injury, malignancy, neurotoxicity, QT prolongation.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, elevated liver enzymes, headache, influenza, cough, sinusitis.
