What is this medication?

Febuxostat, Uloric
Antigout, Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitor

How does this medication work? 

Febuxostat, Uloric selectively inhibits xanthine oxidase reducing the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine to uric acid thereby decreasing uric acid production.

How should I take this medication? 

Usual (Oral): 40mg once daily; may increase to 80mg once daily in patients who do not achieve a serum uric acid level <6 mg/dL after 2 weeks.

How to Take:  Take with food.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Febuxostat, Uloric, make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform. Febuxostat, Uloric has been reported to cause cardiovascular disease in patients with gout, hepatic failure, and hypersensitivity reactions. Febuxostat, Uloric should be used with caution in patients with hepatic impairment and secondary hyperuricemia.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication? 

Skin rash, nausea, hepatic insufficiency, increased serum alanine aminotransferase, increased serum aspartate aminotransferase, arthralgia, acute gout attack
