What is this medication?

Atazanavir+Cobicistat, Evotaz
Antiretroviral, Protease Inhibitor, Cytochrome P-450 Inhibitor

Evotaz is indicated for treatment of HIV-1 Infection.

How does this medication work? 

Evotaz is a combination of atazanavir and cobicistat that is used with other antiretroviral medications to help control HIV-1 infection.  Atazanavir binds to HIV-1 protease activity and inhibits cleavage of viral Gag-Pol polyprotein precursors into individual functional proteins required for infectious HIV. Cobicistat is a mechanism-based inhibitor of cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A). Inhibition of CYP3A-mediated metabolism by cobicistat and increases the systemic concentration of atazanavir.

How should I take this medication? 

Usual (Oral): one tablet (atazanavir 300mg/cobicistat 150mg) once daily.

Note: Administer with other antiretroviral agents; do not use concurrently with other protease inhibitors such as elvitegravir, ritonavir, and atazanavir.

How to Take Atazanavir+Cobicistat, Evotaz:  Take with food.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting Atazanavir+Cobicistat, Evotaz, make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform. Atazanavir+Cobicistat, Evotaz has been reported to cause cholelithiasis, elevated bilirubin, fat redistribution, hypersensitivity reactions including rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, acute exanthematous pustulosis, nephrolithiasis and renal toxicity because of its nephrotoxic profile. Atazanavir+Cobicistat, Evotaz should be used with caution in patients with conduction abnormalities, diabetes, Hemophilia A or B, hepatic and/or renal impairment. Atazanavir+Cobicistat, Evotaz should not be used concurrently with other protease inhibitors such as elvitegravir, ritonavir, and atazanavir.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Increased serum bilirubin, skin rash, scleral icterus
