What is this medication?
Ethambutol, Myambutol/Etibi is indicated for treatment of tuberculosis.
How does this medication work?
Ethambutol, Myambutol/Etibi inhibits arabinosyl transferase resulting in impaired mycobacterial cell wall synthesis.
How should I take this medication?
Note: Always administer in combination with other antitubercular drugs.
Dosing: Doses should be based on lean body weight for patients within a normal weight range for their height (optimal dosing for obese patients has not been established):
40 to 55 kg: 800 mg (14.5 to 20 mg/kg).
56 to 75 kg: 1,200 mg (16 to 21.4 mg/kg).
76 to 90 kg: 1,600 mg (17.8 to 21.1 mg/kg).
How to Take: Can be taken with or without food; if GI upset occur then take with food.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Ethambutol, Myambutol/Etibi make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take. Ethambutol, Myambutol/Etibi can cause hepatoxicity and optic neuritis which is characterized by unilateral or bilateral changes in visual acuity. Ethambutol, Myambutol/Etibi should be used with caution in patients with ocular disease and renal impairment.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
The frequency of side effects is not well defined but have been reported to include the following:
Myocarditis, pericarditis, confusion, disorientation, dizziness, hallucination, headache, malaise, peripheral neuritis, dermatitis, erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis, pruritus, skin rash, gout, abdominal pain, anorexia, gastric distress, nausea, vomiting, hematologic disturbances (i.e. eosinophilia, leukopenia, lymphadenopathy, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia), hepatitis, hepatotoxicity, joint pain, color blindness, decreased visual acuity, optic neuritis, scotoma, visual disturbance, nephritis, pneumonitis and fever.
