What is this medication?

Entacapone, Comtan
Anti-Parkinson Agent, COMT Inhibitor

Entacapone, Comtan is indicated for treatment of Parkinson Disease.

How does this medication work?

Entacapone, Comtan is a reversible and selective inhibitor of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT). When Entacapone, Comtan is taken with levodopa, the pharmacokinetics are altered, resulting in more sustained levodopa serum levels compared to levodopa taken alone. The resulting levels of levodopa provide for increased concentrations available for absorption across the blood-brain barrier, thereby providing for increased CNS levels of dopamine, the active metabolite of levodopa.

How should I take this medication?

How to Take: Always take with levodopa/carbidopa; can be combined with both immediate and sustained release formulations.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Entacapone, Comtan make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  Entacapone, Comtan has been reported to cause abnormal thinking, aggressive behavior, agitation, confusion, delirium, delusions, disorientation, paranoid ideation and psychotic-like behavior.  Dyskinesia, loss in impulse control, melanoma, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, orthostatic hypotension, pleural/retroperitoneal fibrosis, rhabdomyolysis, somnolence, hepatic impairment and discoloration of urine to a brownish color can occur when taking Entacapone, Comtan.
