What is this medication?

Ethacrynic Acid, Decrin/Edecrin

Indicated for treatment of Heart Failure, Hepatic Cirrhosis, Renal Disease, Idiopathic Edema, Ascites, Lymphedema

How does this medication work? 

Ethacrynic Acid, Decrin/Edecrin inhibits the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the ascending loop of Henle and distal renal tubule, interfering with the chloride-binding cotransport system, thus causing increased excretion of water, sodium, chloride, magnesium, and calcium

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: 50mg to 200mg daily.

Intravenous: 50mg to 100mg; repeat doses not routinely recommended.

How to Take: Administer slowly through the tubing of a running infusion or by direct IV injection over several minutes. If a second dose is needed, rotate the injection site to avoid possible thrombophlebitis.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting Ethacrynic Acid, Decrin/Edecrin make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  Loop diuretics like Ethacrynic Acid, Decrin/Edecrin can cause significant diuresis with fluid and electrolyte loss.  Watch for and correct electrolyte disturbances and adjust the dose to avoid dehydration.  There is risk of nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity and hepatic impairment when using Ethacrynic Acid, Decrin/Edecrin.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Thrombophlebitis (with intravenous use), apprehension, brain disease (patients with preexisting liver disease), chills, confusion, fatigue, headache, vertigo, IgA vasculitis, skin rash, gout, hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia (reversible), hypoglycemia, hyponatremia, variations in bicarbonate, abdominal pain, anorexia, diarrhea, dysphagia, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, malaise, nausea, vomiting, acute pancreatitis (rare), hematuria, hematologic disturbances (i.e. agranulocytosis, severe neutropenia, thrombocytopenia), jaundice, local pain, blurred vision, deafness, tinnitus, increased serum creatinine, fever.
