What is this medication? 

Fluconazole, Diflucan
Antifungal, Azole Derivative

Fluconazole/Diflucan is officially indicated for use in treating candidiasis, systemic candida infections, cryptococcal meningitis, and antifungal prophylaxis in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients.  It is also prescribed off-label for use in blastomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, pulmonary cryptococcosis, and tinea infections.

How does this medication work?

Fluconazole/Diflucan inhibits ergosterol synthesis via action on lanosterol 14-a-demethylase resulting in interfered fungal cell membrane formation. 

How should I take this medication? 

50-800mg daily depending on the infection it is being used for.  Some treatment regimens have varying number of days between each dosage.

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, take consistently at same times each day with or without food unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.

You Need to Avoid: This medication has many drug interactions so make sure to ask your physician or pharmacist before using any over the counter medications or herbal supplements.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting Fluconazole/Diflucan make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications (QT prolonging agents) you currently take, if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.  

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication? 

Headache, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea
