What is this medication?

 Acne, Topical Skin Product

Officially indicated to treat acne vulgaris.

How does this medication work? 

Adapalene is a retinoid-like compound that acts as a modulator of cell differentiation, keratinization, and inflammatory processes, all of which represent important features in the pathology of acne vulgaris.

How should I take this medication? 

Acne Vulgaris

Topical: Apply once daily in the evening before bedtime. If irritation occurs, may reduce the frequency of application.

How to Use Adapalene, Differin:  Apply adapalene/Differin as directed by your doctor and use only on your skin; keep out of your mouth, nose, and eyes.  Do not apply on any mucous membranes.  Avoid using occlusive dressing or wrappings.  For cream/gel apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin before bedtime.  For lotion apply after washing the area with a mild or soapless cleanser and dried.  Apply about 3 to 4 pump actuations to cover the entire face.

Some Common Side Effects When Using Adapalene, Differin: Skin irritation such as itchiness, burning, or stinging may occur, this generally occurs during the first few weeks of therapy.  If a severe skin irritation or sensitivity reaction occurs discontinue use.  Adapalene/Differin can make the skin more susceptible/sensitive to UV light, increasing the risk of getting a sunburn.  Make sure to use sunscreen daily and other protective measures. 

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Do not use in patients with hypersensitivity to tretinoin or any component of the formulation. 

Watch for signs of an allergic reaction which can include: rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing or talking; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue or throat.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

The most common side effects occur on at the site of skin application.  Call your doctor or get medical help if any of these side effects or any other side effects bother you or do not go away:
