What is this medication?

Diclofenac+Misoprostol, Arthrotec
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug and prostaglandin

Diclofenac+Misoprostol, Arthrotec is indicated for management of osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Misoprostol can birth defects, abortion, premature birth and/or uterine rupture when given to pregnant women.  Patients must be advised of the abortifacient property and warned not to give the drug to others.”

How does this medication work? 

Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory that reversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 and 2 (COX-1 and 2) enzymes, which results in decreased formation of prostaglandin precursors.

Misoprostol is a prostaglandin E1 analog that binds to myometrial cells and induces uterine contractions.  Misoprostol also replaces the protective prostaglandins consumed by prostaglandin-inhibiting therapies.

How should I take this medication? 

Usual (Oral): One tablet diclofenac 50mg/misoprostol 200mcg 3 or 4 times daily.

How to Take: Take after a meal or with food. Tablets should not be crushed, chewed or dissolved. Do not use tablets that are broken.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting Diclofenac+Misoprostol, Arthrotec make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and current medical conditions.  Women must be advised of the abortifacient property of misoprostol. Diclofenac has been associated with CNS effects including dizziness, blurred vision and should be used with caution in patients that require mental alertness while performing tasks. Diclofenac may increase the risk of serious GI inflammation, ulceration, bleeding and perforation and should never be used in patients with active GI bleeding. Diclofenac can elevate liver enzymes, cause hyperkalemia, compromise renal function and potentially cause fatal serious skin events such as exfoliative dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN).

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Diarrhea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea.
