Histamine H1 Antagonist
Cyproheptadine is indicated for treatment of perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis.
How does this medication work?
Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine that exhibits both antiserotonergic and anticholinergic effects.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: 4mg to 20mg daily in divided doses.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Cyproheptadine make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take. Cyproheptadine can cause central nervous system depression (i.e. dizziness). Cyproheptadine should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, increased intraocular pressure, respiratory disease and thyroid dysfunction.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
The frequency and incident of side effects has not been determined but can include the following:
Estrasystoles, hypotension, palpitations, tachycardia, ataxia, chills, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, euphoria, excitement, fatigue, hallucination, headache, hysteria, insomnia, irritability, nervousness, neuritis, restlessness, sedation, seizure, vertigo, skin photosensitivity, skin rash, urticaria, abdominal pain, anorexia, cholestasis, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, xerostomia, difficult in micturition, urinary frequency, urinary retention, hematologic disturbances (i.e. anemia, agranulocytosis, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia), hepatic failure, jaundice, tremor, diplopia, tinnitus, nasal congestion, pharyngitis, thickening of bronchial secretion.
