Anti-Parkinson Agent, COMT Inhibitor
Entacapone, Comtan is indicated for treatment of Parkinson Disease.
How does this medication work?
Entacapone, Comtan is a reversible and selective inhibitor of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT). When Entacapone, Comtan is taken with levodopa, the pharmacokinetics are altered, resulting in more sustained levodopa serum levels compared to levodopa taken alone. The resulting levels of levodopa provide for increased concentrations available for absorption across the blood-brain barrier, thereby providing for increased CNS levels of dopamine, the active metabolite of levodopa.
How should I take this medication?
How to Take: Always take with levodopa/carbidopa; can be combined with both immediate and sustained release formulations.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Entacapone, Comtan make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take. Entacapone, Comtan has been reported to cause abnormal thinking, aggressive behavior, agitation, confusion, delirium, delusions, disorientation, paranoid ideation and psychotic-like behavior. Dyskinesia, loss in impulse control, melanoma, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, orthostatic hypotension, pleural/retroperitoneal fibrosis, rhabdomyolysis, somnolence, hepatic impairment and discoloration of urine to a brownish color can occur when taking Entacapone, Comtan.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Nausea, dyskinesia, syncope, dizziness, fatigue, anxiety, drowsiness, agitation, hallucination, diaphoresis, diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, vomiting, xerostomia, dyspepsia, flatulence, gastritis, urine discoloration (brown-orange), purpura, bacterial infection, back pain, weakness, dyspnea.
