What is this medication?

Balsalazide, Colazal
5-Aminosalicylic Acid Derivative

Officially indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate ulcerative colitis in patients intolerant to sulfasalazine.

How does this medication work? 

Balsalazide, Colazal is a prodrug that is converted into 5-aminosalicylic acid (mesalamine, active), 4-aminobenzoyl-β-alanine (inert), and their metabolites. 5-aminosalicylic acid may decrease inflammation by blocking the production of arachidonic acid metabolites topically in the colon mucosa.

How should I take this medication? 

Ulcerative Colitis (Induction of Remission)
Oral: Take 2.25g 3 times daily for 8 to 12 weeks.

How to Take: It is recommended to swallow the capsule whole and do not crush or chew it because of the risk of staining to the teeth and/or tongue. For patients that cannot swallow the capsule, open the capsule, and sprinkle the contents on applesauce or soft food and swallow immediately. When sprinkled on food, there may be a staining of the teeth and/or tongue. Balsalazide, Colazal can be taken with or without food.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

There can be a worsening of ulcerative colitis symptoms during the initial stages of treatment
Discontinue use in patients who experience cramping, acute abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, fever, rash, and headache
Staining of teeth and/or tongue is the capsule is opened
Use with cautions in patients with pyloric stenosis, hepatic and renal impairment

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Generally, is well tolerated with the most common adverse reactions related to the following:

Headache, abdominal pain.
