What is this medication?
Otic Antibiotic (Fluoroquinolone); Otic Corticosteroid
Ciprofloxacin/Dexamethasone (Otic), Ciprodex is indicated for acute otitis externa.
How does this medication work?
Ciprofloxacin inhibits DNA gyrase in bacteria which is important in protein synthesis. Blocking DNA gyrase results inhibits relaxation of supercoiled DNA so it cannot be used for protein synthesis and promotes the breakage of double stranded DNA eventually causing cell death. Humans do not have DNA gyrase which makes it an ideal target for antibiotics.
Dexamethasone reduces neutrophil migration to the affected area and reverses the dilation and blood vessel permeability from the inflammatory response resulting in decreased access of cells to the site. It also reduces lymphatic flow to the area which reduces immune activity.
