What is this medication?

Ciprofloxacin (Ophthalmic), Ciloxan
Ophthalmic Antibiotic, Fluoroquinolone

Ciprofloxacin (Ophthalmic), Ciloxan is indicated for bacterial conjunctivitis, and corneal ulcers.

How does this medication work?

Ciprofloxacin (Ophthalmic), Ciloxan inhibits DNA gyrase in bacteria which is important in protein synthesis.  Blocking DNA gyrase results inhibits relaxation of supercoiled DNA so it cannot be used for protein synthesis and promotes the breakage of double stranded DNA eventually causing cell death.  Humans do not have DNA gyrase which makes it an ideal target for antibiotics.

How should I take this medication?

Solution: Instill 1-2 drops into affected eye(s) every 2 hours while awake for 2 days and 1 to 2 drops every 4 hours while awake for the next 5 days.  For corneal ulcer, the dosing frequency is significantly higher.

Ointment: Apply a 1/2-inch ribbon into the conjunctival sac 3 times/day for the first 2 days, followed by a 1/2 inch ribbon applied twice daily for the next 5 days

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, use consistently at same times each day unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.  Apply light pressure to lacrimal sac (inside corner of eye near nose) for 60 seconds after application to prevent drainage of the drop from eye.

You Need to Avoid: Do not wear contact lenses during therapy, do not touch tip of applicator to any surfaces or to the eye itself to avoid contamination

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before you begin using Ciprofloxacin, Ciloxan, be sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions or allergies you may have, any medications you are taking, whether you are pregnant or breast-feeding, and any other significant facts about your health. These factors may affect how you should use this medication.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of this medicine, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
