What is this medication?

Celecoxib, Celebrex
Analgesic; Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID); COX-2 Selective

“ALERT: US Boxed Warning

Serious cardiovascular risk:
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) cause an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke, which can be fatal. This risk may occur early in the treatment and may increase with duration of use.

Celecoxib is contraindicated in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

Serious gastrointestinal risk:
NSAIDs cause an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events, including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. These events can occur at any time during use and without warning symptoms. Elderly patients and patients with a prior history of peptic ulcer disease and/or GI bleeding are at higher risk for serious GI events.”

Celecoxib/Celebrex is officially indicated for acute pain, ankylosing spondylitis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, osteoarthritis, primary dysmenorrhea, and rheumatoid arthritis.  It is also prescribed off-label for acute gout flares. (may be used for conditions not listed)

How does this medication work?

Celecoxib/Celebrex reversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) which decreases prostaglandin production (inflammatory mediators) with no effect on COX-1 at therapeutic doses.  Has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties (fever reducing).

How should I take this medication?

Oral: 100-400mg divided into one or two daily dosages based on severity of pain, patient response, and side effects.

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, take consistently at same times each day unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.

You Need to Avoid: Regular alcohol consumption can increase the risk of an intestinal bleed.  Do not mix with ibuprofen, naproxen, ASA or other over the counter NSAIDs due to increased risk of adverse effects.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Celecoxib/Celebrex make sure your physician is aware of any allergies (sulfonamide) or medications you currently take, if you have asthma, have had bariatric surgery, coronary artery bypass graft surgery, liver disease, kidney disease, are pregnant or breastfeeding

Note that all NSAIDs can increase risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as can cause gastrointestinal inflammation, ulceration, and bleeding.  Caution should be used in the elderly, those with cardiovascular disease and a history of gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding.

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
