Hypertension, dyslipidemia, angina, documented coronary artery disease, primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. For use when both amlodipine and atorvastatin is appropriate.
How does this medication work?
Atorvastatin lower cholesterol and lipoprotein levels by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol synthesis in the liver and by increasing the number of hepatic LDL receptors on the cell-surface to enhance uptake and catabolism of LDL. Atorvastatin also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to improve endothelial function by reducing inflammation at the site of coronary plaque and by inhibiting platelet aggregation.
Amlodipine blocks calcium channels in smooth muscle of the blood vessels which relaxes them causing them to dilate them which reduces vascular resistance thereby lowering blood pressure and increasing blood flow in areas such as the heart and limbs.
