What is this medication?

Praziquantel, Biltricide
Anthelmintic

Praziquantel, Biltricide is indicated for treatment of helminths.

How does this medication work? 

Praziquantel, Biltricide increases the cell permeability to calcium in schistosomes, causing strong contractions and paralysis of worm musculature leading to detachment of suckers from the blood vessel walls and to dislodgment.

How should I take this medication? 

Clonorchiasis/opisthorchiasis
Oral: 25 mg/kg/dose 3 times daily for 1 to 2 days 

Schistosomiasis:
S. haematobium, Schistosoma intercalatum, or S. mansoni:

Oral: 40 mg/kg/day as a single dose or in 2 divided doses for 1 day

S. japonicum or S. mekongi: 
Oral: 60 mg/kg/day in 2 or 3 divided doses for 1 day

Note: Repeat treatment may be needed in 2 to 4 weeks to increase effectiveness

How to Take: Administer tablets with water during meals. Tablets should be promptly swallowed to avoid bitter taste that may cause gagging or vomiting. Tablets may be halved or quartered; do not chew. Tablets may be crushed or disintegrated and mixed with semi-solid food or liquid; use within 1 hour of mixing. Tablets are scored and may be split into four 150 mg segments.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting Praziquantel, Biltricide make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have a history of cardiac arrhythmia, a seizure disorder, hepatic impairment, if you have neurocysticercosis, schistosomiasis, are pregnant, or breastfeeding.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Dizziness, headache, malaise, urticaria, abdominal distress, nausea, fever
